Migrants face $1000 entry fee
09feb06
PLUMBERS, electricians and bricklayers who want to migrate to Australia to help tackle skills shortages could be forced to pay $1000 to attend one-stop shop assessment centres overseas.
As state and territory leaders prepare to sign on to a new national approach to apprenticeships and skills recognition, officials were last night completing details of the plan.
However, the Labor Party attacked the failure to invest significantly in tackling the skills shortage, with the commonwealth offering just $11 million over four years to fix the problem.
Documents obtained by The Australian reveal premiers have identified six key occupations that must be tackled: electricians, plumbers, motor mechanics, refrigeration and airconditioning mechanics and carpenters and bricklayers.
The action plan also confirms migrants would be charged about $1000 to access the scheme.
Do, or do not. There is no "try."
