m-am gindit sa ne mai si delectam ochii.... am dat peste Te Ara, o encyclopedia nz
Sand beaches - New Zealand’s coast has many sandy beaches, such as this one on Codfish Island (Whenuahou), off Stewart Island. As the sea level rose to its present level about 6,000 years ago, it flooded the valleys of the mainland, forming features such as the Marlborough Sounds. The sea also brought large quantities of offshore sand, which formed the beaches and dunes of the coastline.

Rocky shores - Boulder and gravel beaches are more common in the South Island. They are the result of a tectonically active environment in which rivers carry large quantities of eroded material, much of it very coarse. Mixed sand and gravel beaches, rare worldwide, are common in New Zealand. Pictured here are the boulder beach and mudstone cliffs at Cape Foulwind, on the West Coast.

Black Sand Beaches - On the South Island’s West Coast, black sand beaches such as this have successfully been mined for gold. The sands also contain other heavy minerals eroded from the Southern Alps and concentrated on beaches through wave action. In the North Island the black sands are derived from volcanic rocks and dominate the 750 km of shoreline between Taranaki and Cape Rēinga in the far north. Auckland’s black sands are mined and smelted into iron.
Kaikōura’s sperm whales - Just one kilometre off Kaikōura, on the north-east coast of the South Island, a canyon drops 1,000 m into the ocean depths. This attracts abundant marine life, including sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and their prey, the giant squid (Architeuthis). The Kaikōura sperm whales, once hunted in New Zealand waters, are now fully protected, and whale watching has become part of the region’s growing tourist industry. The tail or fluke of the whale is unique, and can be used to identify individual whales. This stamp was one of a scenic issue in 2004.

Long considered the cradle of Polynesian and European settlement in New Zealand, the Bay of Islands is rich in history and natural beauty. The finest Maritime Park in New Zealand with 144 islands, secluded bays, an abundance of marine life and scenery. Conditions permitting you can go swimming with dolphins. This is an ideal place to use as a base for expeditions to other Northland destinations including Cape Reinga, located at the very tip of New Zealand where the Tasman Sea meets the mighty Pacific Ocean.

When you think of Taupo region, think of fresh air, snow, trout, volcanoes, rivers, lakes, people, fun, food, skydiving and attitudes. Lake Taupo itself was created by the largest known eruption of the past 5,000 years, it was so big the sun went hazy in China. Today, what remains is a lake the size of Singapore and the largest fresh water lake in Australasia.

When you think of Hawke's Bay - the "Fruitbowl of New Zealand" - think of sun, surf, orchards, wineries, cafes. With its unique history and attractions, the region affords tourists an unforgettable experience. It has an amazing amount of things to do and see within thirty minutes to an hour of either of the Twin Cities (Napier and Hastings).
Hawke's Bay is the Art Deco Capital of the World - thanks to the 1931 earthquake that virtually destroyed most of Napier and Hastings. The cities were rebuilt in the fashionable styles of the time - Spanish Mission, Stripped Classical, and above all Art Deco. Cape Kidnappers is one of the largest, most accessible, mainland Gannet colonies in the world. Visited by thousands of people each year, particularly between early November and late February, the Cape itself is a geological marvel. Hawke's Bay consistently produces a broad spectrum of award-winning wines. With 28 wineries in the region, all of them open to tourists for wine-tasting, and many with restaurants, Hawke's Bay has become world-renowned for its wineries. The "Wine Trail" is a must for all visitors to the region.

Wanaka on the shores of Lake Wanaka has a beautiful setting looking up to the mountains of the Southern Alps. From some places it is possible to see Mt Aspiring in fine weather. It is the gateway to the Haast Pass and the site of the headquarters of Mount Aspiring National Park. Adventure tourism offered around Wanaka includes canyoning, rock climbing and mountaineering, skydiving, paragliding, jetboating on the Clutha River, rafting, whitewater sledging, windsurfing, off-road biking including helibiking, and horse-riding - all in the setting of Wanaka's magnificent scenery.
